Just what is Cloud Computing

How Cloud Computing differs from traditional Information Technology and why this revolution matters.

It is a datacenter connected to a distent location by the internet. The cloud icon stands for, the user does not need to be concerned with the details, the service provider is doing that for you. It provides apps and storage for you. As such it is about offering software on a virtual computer platform, and a network infrastructure service that reduces cost for the user. As a business resource, information technology today looks a lot like electric power utility providers, with services on demand as needed.

So just what is Cloud Computing, and why is it so different from what has come before?

Cloud Computing is multi-tenant, it’s faster, half the cost, pay as you go, it grows as you grow or shrinks as you shrink. It is extremely efficient. The Cloud is about businesses giving up the cost and burden of managing and maintaining hardware all together. Cloud Computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

What this means in plain terms is the ability for end users to utilize parts of bulk resources and that these resources can be acquired quickly and easily such as the:

  • Bringing enterprise scale infrastructure to small and medium businesses.
  • Enabling Information Technology resources to be focused on its strategic role
  • Improved employee mobility to be more effective.
  • Increased ability to inovate and effective.
  • Frees current IT staff for other projects.
  • Reduces IT operating costs.
  • Enables you to offer new products or service.

Users of cloud services are currently saving 13% on their organizations information technology budget in 2012. Those same users saved 10% in 2011. Furthermore, they expect to save 17% in one year and 25% in four years through the use of cloud resources.
